17th August 2011

This season the Dodgers have played in only 6 extra-inning games, but  have won them all. Since 1901, only 3 teams have gone an entire season in which they played at least one extra inning game and not lost any of them. Here are the all time leaders in extra-inning winning percentage.

Which Red Sox Game Was Featured in ‘The Town’?

1st March 2011

Note: What follows is the complete text of an email sent to us by B-R reader David Matchett, so all credit for this research goes to him. Enjoy!

I was on a flight this weekend and watched The Town with Ben Affleck. When Ben and Jeremy Renner were scouting Fenway Park for their big heist they were in the upper deck in right field and there was a game going on while they talked. The scene cut to the game and a play was shown. I remembered your Ferris Bueller post from a few weeks ago and it got me thinking about the game that was being played in this movie.

August 1, 1976: The last day Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson played in the field

21st February 2011

A read named Joe sent in this gem a while back. In an interesting coincidence, two of the greatest players of their generation, Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson, both played their final game in the field on August 1, 1976.

What's more amazing is that it happened in the same game.

Here are Robinson's games from his final playing season of 1976, from August 1st onward:

He didn't play much after August 1, and always as a DH, pinch-hitter or a pinch-runner, and he never stayed in the game on defense. Keep in mind he was also the manager of the Indians that year.

Like Robinson, he appeared only as a DH or pinch-hitter after August 1.

In a weird way, this reminds me of how Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on the same day (Independence Day, no less.) Aaron and Robinson finished their careers just shortly after the United Stated bicentennial. And there's your Presidents Day tie-in...

Possible Giants-Rangers World Series

13th October 2010

The odds are not favorable for a Giants-Rangers World Series match-up this year. (And, it's probably not a pairing that the big cheeses at FOX are rooting for in this season's big dance.)  But, while it's extremely uphill, it's not impossible for these two teams to advance to the Fall Classic in 2010. And, these two franchises have faced each other before in a game that's part of baseball history.

Why Mark Reynolds is not the next Mike Schmidt

21st August 2010

Through 500 career games, Mark Reynolds and Mike Schmidt have remarkably similar career numbers.

Reynolds had a line of .250/.336/.495 with 108 HR, 316 RBI, 220 BB, and 675 K.

Schmidt had a line of .252/.372/.507 with 108 HR, 301 RBI, 302 BB, and 503 K.

So is Reynolds going to be a Hall of Fame third baseman just like Michael Jack?

I highly doubt it. Click through for more.

Not so perfect: Braden, Halladay, and Galarraga since their perfect games

21st July 2010

Check out the cumulative pitching numbers for the two guys to throw perfect games this season, as well as Armando Galarraga, since each of their gems:

Player GS CG W L IP H R ER 2B 3B HR SO BB IBB HBP GDP SF ROE ERA BF BA OBP SLG OPS BAbip Pit Str StL StS SB CS PO aLI WPA RE24
Braden 9 1 0 5 52.2 69 30 24 16 0 6 36 10 0 2 3 0 2 4.10 233 0.319 0.355 0.477 0.832 0.362 817 66% 19% 8% 1 1 3 0.97 -0.265 -0.16
Halladay 9 2 3 5 68.0 71 24 22 11 1 10 61 7 0 3 7 2 0 2.91 277 0.271 0.296 0.435 0.731 0.316 954 70% 18% 12% 5 1 0 1.03 0.990 10.78
Galarraga 7 0 1 2 41.0 51 25 25 8 4 5 17 14 0 1 2 1 2 5.49 186 0.300 0.355 0.482 0.837 0.309 696 63% 17% 7% 2 2 0 0.94 -0.503 -2.02

Braden has been decent, allowing few walks but a lot of hits and an ERA close to league average. He has yet to get a single win since his perfect game.

Halladay has been very good, with a 61/7 K/BB ratio in 68 innings but has earned only a 3-5 record thanks in large part to the terrible slump the Phillies' offense was in.

Galarraga hasn't been all that good. His WHIP isn't terrible but 17 strikeouts in 41 innings isn't going to get it done. He's got just 1 win since his near-perfecto.

Baseball-Reference FAQ: Pre-1975 Save Statistics

15th July 2010

Over the years, many users have written to us expressing confusion over the assignment of saves for seasons prior to 1975, the year the current save rule was put into effect. This post will hopefully set the record straight on what changes the rule has seen over the years, which version of the rule we apply to older seasons, and why the save totals on a player's main page might not always match those you find in the player's game logs and splits.
