Walking 6+ In Less Than 6 IP In Post-Season Game

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 20, 2011

C.J. Wilson walked 6 last night - in less than 6 IP of work. How often does this happen? Who else has walked 6+ batters in less than 6 innings pitched in a post-season game?

Here is the list -

CC Sabathia and Rex Barney are the only ones to do this twice.

    Abbott and Cuellar. wow

  2. herlin Says:

    God I remember Ankiel's one。He seemed to throw everything 10 feet high.Kind of sad…

  3. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Barney was always fun to watch; but it took a lot of chutzpah to dig into the batters box with him on the mound. What amazed me was that there weren't more brawls from him throwing at people; but I honestly think even batters knew his control was so bad that what from another pitcher might be headhunting was to Barney just one more pitch that didn't fly quite right.

Is today's box score page empty for anyone else?

    Me too David.

  6. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

    Likewise, David.

  7. scott-53 Says:

Interesting the first 11 times this happened the starting pitchers were 0-11.

Starting pitchers are 1-1 with 5 no decisions the past 7 games since.

  8. scott-53 Says:

Make that 1-2 including last nights loss.

  9. Doug Says:

CC is the only guy to pick up a Win.

However, starters have picked up a post-season W 43 times with a lower game score than CC's 46. Lowest was Kirk Rueter's 29 in game 1 of the 2002 NLCS.

Only one pitcher picked up a W with more walks and a lower game score than CC. Livan Hernandez went 8+ innings in game 5 of the 1997 WS, beating the Indians 8-7 while allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 8 walks, and 2 Ks, for a game score of 40.

Ryan Dempster's on there?? Noooo.... must be an arithmetic error in the PI.

    😛

  11. Richard Chester Says:

    What, no Tommy Byrne!?

On the serious side Byrne's control improved towards the end of his career. In Game 2 of the 1955 WS he pitched the Yankees to a 4-2 CG victory over the Dodgers, giving up 2R(both earned), 5H and "only" 5BB. He was the only left-hander to pitch a CG against the Dodgers that year. A good-hitting pitcher, he helped his own cause with a 2-RBI single.

  12. Richard Chester Says:

    @3

Barney was the Orioles PA announcer for a long time.

  13. Larry R. Says:

1997 was some year. We had 4 of these outings in a 3 week span. And Good Lord, Leiter...114 pitches in 4.2 IP. That translates to a 220 pitch CG.

  14. Ed Says:

Wow, overall team record of 3-19 counting last night! And the wins took a minimum of 7 runs scored and an average of 11.

The first name that came to my not-yet-caffeinated mind was Bill Bevens, in his one-hitter on 10/3/47. He's not on the list because he pitched 8⅔ innings, but I'm glad to report that he had walked six before getting an out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
