Via BuzzFeed.com, our friends at the New York Times have made what has been dubbed the Nerdiest Correction Ever, at the intersection of baseball and The Hobbit.

    They still didn't get the correction right. I was so upset I wrote this open letter on my website:

    That should not even be considered as a correction, since it is supposedly what Dickey said. Or are editorial comments now required to be inserted when someone is quoted.

    @5, Richard -- I think a reporter has an obligation to check the accuracy of statements that he quotes, to the extent reasonably possible -- whether the topic is fictional weapons of mass destruction or ... well .. other fictional weapons.
