The Nashville Volunteers began play when the Southern Association was established in 1901, and the team captured the league's first two championships. In 1954, Bob Lennon hit 54 home runs to set a league record. For their entire existence, the club played its home games at Sulphur Dell. The Vols played their final game in 1961 as the circuit ceased operations following that season.
In 1963, a second Volunteers team returned to Sulphur Dell and played in the South Atlantic League. However, that club struggled and folded after just one season.
