The Braves won the first NL West championship, led by slugger Hank Aaron (44 home runs) and stellar pitching from young pitchers Phil Niekro (23-13, 2.53) and Ron Reed (18-10, 3.47). The team clinched the NL West on September 28, bouyed by the acquisition of future Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm from the California Angels, along with Bob Priddy, for Mickey Rivers and Clint Compton on September 11. The Braves lost just four games after that trade (15-4), and won the division by three games.
