The expansion New York Mets began play in 1962 and set records for futility. They lost their first nine games and were mathematically elimated from winning the pennant by early August. Starting pitchers Roger Craig and Al Jackson both lost twenty games, and no pitcher on their staff had a winning record. Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn hit. 306 with the club in his final major league season.
